Reducing costs at Grupo Simões with AWS cloud migration

Enkel supported Grupo Simões in migrating its data center to the cloud in record time, overcoming connectivity and deadline challenges. With architecture based on AWS best practices and Terraform automation, the project achieved a 73% cost reduction in the first year, ensuring efficiency and governance.

Client

In 1970, Antônio de Andrade Simões and Petronio Augusto Pinheiro founded Refrigerantes da Amazônia, the first Coca-Cola franchise in northern Brazil. Never ceasing to innovate, they opened the carbon dioxide plant Gás da Amazônia in 1973, ensuring one of the essential raw materials for soda production. Later, the two partners met Osmar Pacífico, who would become the third partner, completing the trio that formed what is now known as Grupo Simões. Together, the three partners acquired COMPAR - Companhia Paraense de Refrigerantes, a Coca-Cola manufacturer in Belém, Pará, in 1976.
During the 1980s, additional Coca-Cola franchise plants were established in Rondônia, Acre, Amapá, and two more in Pará, in the cities of Santarém and Marabá. Grupo Simões was recognized by Coca-Cola Brazil as the "Manufacturer of the Decade" due to its courage and entrepreneurial spirit in believing in the region and investing in the business. Over time, the beverage companies merged and became known as Brasil Norte Bebidas. Today, the group, now professionalized but still owned by the families of the three founding partners, is composed of divisions in Vehicles, Port Logistics, and Gases, with two car dealerships, Murano and Shizen.

Client Needs and Challenges

Grupo Simões faced the urgent challenge of migrating its current data center due to contractual restrictions, which imposed a strict project deadline. To meet this demand, it was crucial to accelerate negotiations and start the project as quickly as possible. Additionally, the data center connectivity links were limited, further increasing the complexity and pressure to meet the migration timeline.
Enkel was present from the beginning, supporting Grupo Simões on its journey toward IT efficiency and governance. The first challenge was successfully tackled, with the infrastructure being migrated to the cloud in record time, a feat achieved through collaboration between Enkel and Grupo Simões without any impact on commercial operations. Following this, the focus shifted to implementing continuous operations, evolving, and monitoring the environment with an emphasis on governance and efficiency gains.

Solution Architecture

To ensure the company’s computational environment could evolve effectively, we focused on building a well-architected foundation based on AWS best practices. We configured AWS Control Tower, applying global policies and provisioning workload accounts in compliance with these standards.

Increasing Agility Without Compromising Security

We implemented the creation of all servers using Terraform (Infrastructure as Code) through an automated pipeline. Simultaneously, we migrated the data to application servers. This approach ensured a consistent and efficient deployment aligned with best practices in infrastructure automation and control. We chose AWS Database Migration Service to migrate the database servers, following a strategic plan developed after testing and validating smaller workloads.

Comprehensive management and meticulous monitoring of the entire migration process were conducted through AWS Migration Hub, providing a clear view of already-migrated assets and those pending migration. This enabled precise tracking of all project phases, ensuring execution within the established deadlines and standards.
